Greeting— Unkai Sōten (“After the clouds, clear skies”)

In recent clinical encounters, I have increasingly heard the concerns of thoughtful individuals who fear that reckless actions by nations such as Russia and the United States could lead to a third world war or even nuclear catastrophe, threatening the survival of humanity. Many people are living with anxiety and sorrow in what feels like an era in which life and health are treated lightly.

In the middle years of the early 21st century, having already entered advanced old age, I myself faced a series of difficult circumstances. Extreme and relentless heat took a toll on both body and mind; contemporaries began to retire; and I experienced the loss of a respected mentor. I responded, to some extent, to consultations from friends regarding the closure of their clinics, yet I neglected my own situation. Aging, illness, and death are inevitable for all living beings. Nevertheless, as long as patients continue to seek care, I must find a way to sustain medical practice.

At a time when my spirits had sunk, unexpected support appeared. Dr. Yuriko Hayashi and Dr. Kazuhiko Kume, both board-certified specialists in sleep medicine, offered their assistance. Dr. Hayashi now sees patients on Tuesday evenings and Friday mornings. Dr. Kume, a molecular biologist with extensive experience in sleep medicine, will begin seeing patients on alternate Friday evenings starting in April 2026. It is for these reasons that I have taken up the pen to write this message for the first time in a decade.

The spring of 2026 feels as though it may mark a season of renewal and restoration.

Greeting

I strive to provide care where people experiencing sleep problems or emotional difficulties can feel comfortable seeking advice.

As a psychiatrist, I have been involved in the care of many individuals struggling with mental health concerns and sleep-related problems. My particular area of expertise is sleep medicine, and I provide consultation for a wide range of sleep issues, including insomnia and excessive daytime sleepiness.

I believe it is important to listen carefully to each patient and to consider treatment together, taking into account their individual life circumstances and overall health.

I also place importance on understanding the mental health concerns of working adults and the physical and emotional changes associated with different stages of a woman’s life, approaching these issues with empathy as a fellow woman.

Please also feel free to consult me about concerns such as memory problems in later life or the early detection of dementia.

Greeting

I graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Tokyo in 1987. After graduation, I completed rotational training in internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, psychiatry, and orthopedic surgery. I then continued my main professional work in basic medical research at the university.

Since 2000, I have specialized in sleep research and clinical practice, and have been engaged in sleep medicine for about 25 years.

Currently, while working in research and education as a professor at the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Nagoya City University, I also serve as a board-certified instructor of the Japanese Society of Sleep Research. In this role, I run a weekly specialized outpatient clinic for sleep disorders at the Department of Psychiatry of Fujita Health University Hospital (Wednesday afternoons).

Although I am not a board-certified psychiatrist, I have treated many patients with mental health conditions. I have also seen many individuals whose sleep problems have led to difficulties at school or school refusal.

Through a fortunate connection, I will begin seeing patients at Kayukawa Clinic starting in April 2026. I look forward to working with you.
