The film The Danish Girl (2015) is set in 1920s Denmark and portrays the changing relationship between a painter and their spouse, as well as one person’s awakening to their gender identity.
After an accidental beginning, the husband discovers a female self within, while the wife—though initially confused—tries to understand and accept this transformation. In an era when the concept of transgender identity was scarcely recognized, the path leading to gender-affirming surgery raises profound questions about human identity and the nature of love.
Referring to Aesop’s fable “The Hyena,” this essay reflects on the possibilities of human understanding suggested by the film.
