The sweltering heat, floods, and earthquakes of the summer of 2018 have passed, and the season has finally turned to autumn. Even in areas spared major damage, anxiety and fatigue linger in the mind and body. In such times, it is especially important to avoid overexertion and take a careful look at one’s own state.
This article reflects on a psychiatrist’s career through public lectures and newspaper interviews, examining work on sleep disorders and karoshi (death from overwork). It considers practical wisdom for “not overdoing it” and “living moderately,” and asks what kind of mental approach is needed in today’s society from the perspective of medical practice.
